Kit Carson's fort
1866
Fort Massachusetts, built on the side of Blanca Peak in 1852, was moved to the valley floor and renamed Fort Garland in 1858. Kit Carson commanded Fort Garland from 1866 to 1867. He worked for peace with the Ute people through his friendship with Chief Ouray and his wife Chipeta, and tipis were set up near the fort buildings during talks.
